RAIDER SPOTLIGHT!

HONOR'S BAND

123

Five Benjamin Logan Middle School students were selected to participate in the 2019 District XI Honor Band. Selection to be in this band is done by recommendation from Miss Lewis. However, students who are recommended may not be chosen due to limitation based on the band’s desired instrumentation. Participating this year were three eighth graders- George Ahnutae (bass clarinet), Robert Leezer (percussion), and Parker McGowan (percussion); and two seventh graders- Lucas Harshfield (horn) and Graham Studebaker (trumpet).

Over a two-day period, the students had the chance to meet and play with students from other schools in the district, rehearse some very challenging music, and work with guest conductor James Dowdy. Mr. Dowdy is an active OMEA adjudicator, conductor of the Junior Winds, and conducts Capital University’s 8-9th grade auditioned ensemble. The students spent seven hours rehearsing and working hard to prepare for their concert! Not only did the students get to work with a guest conductor, but also partake in a masterclass with a specialist on their specific instrument. The next day, the students had a short rehearsal before performing the music they had brought together after one day of rehearsal! Miss Lewis is so proud of the band students who participated in District XI Honor Band as well as those who sought after a recommendation for the event!
